For over 16 years the BIENESTAR familia has been working non-stop to promote the well-being of the Latino community in Southern California. As the largest community based Latino HIV/AIDS organization in the nation, BIENESTAR is the leader in the movement against the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the Latino community.
On behalf of the BIENESTAR familia, I would like to invite you to be part of our continued work and growth. Below is the first volume of our quarterly e-newsletter highlighting a few of our accomplishments last year. Through our e-newsletters you will be updated on BIENESTAR’s services, events and accomplishments. The e-newsletter will also update you with important information regarding issues affecting Latinos living with HIV/AIDS, LGBT Latinos and other social justice struggles.
Together we can stay informed about issues affecting our diverse community and take action when needed.

Por más de 16 años, la familia de BIENESTAR ha trabajado y luchado para promover el bienestar de la comunidad Latina en el Sur de California. BIENESTAR es la organización de base comunitaria más grande en la Nación convirtiéndose en un líder en el movimiento contra la epidemia del VIH/SIDA en la comunidad Latina.
En nombre de la familia de BIENESTAR te invito a que formes parte de nuestro trabajo y crecimiento. Este es el primer volumen de nuestro boletín electrónico que será enviado trimestralmente. Nuestro boletín te mantendrá al tanto de nuestros programas, servicios, eventos y logros. On December 1st, over 500 community members joined BIENESTAR in commemoration of World AIDS Day. Oscar De La O and congressional leaders addressed Latino mothers, fathers, sons, sisters and brothers and asked them to unite against the HIV epidemic currently affecting Latinos and other marginalized communities. Today, Latinos represent one out of every 5 newly diagnosed HIV cases in the US and 48% of all new AIDS cases in Los Angeles County.

El primero de Diciembre más de 500 miembros de la comunidad se unieron a BIENESTAR para conmemorar el Día Mundial del SIDA. Oscar De La O y líderes congresistas dirigieron su mensaje- exhortando a toda la comunidad Latina presente-madres, padres, hijas, primos, hermanas, y tíos, a que se unieran en la lucha contra el SIDA. Actualmente los Latinos representan uno de cada cinco nuevos casos de VIH diagnosticados en los Estados Unidos, y en el condado de los Ángeles los Latinos representan el 48% de todos los nuevos casos de SIDA. |

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) granted BIENESTAR a five-year grant of $2,250,000 for HIV/AIDS prevention aimed at Latino gay and bisexual men between the ages of 14 and 24 in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. The grant has allowed BIENESTAR to implement the Sabores Mpowerment program and expand the availability of HIV counseling, testing and referral services. The Sabores program was designed at BIENESTAR by and for young Latino men and it incorporates social cofactors that can lead to the risk of infection, such as socioeconomic hardship, racism, cultural insensitivity, anti-immigrant sentiment and homophobia. |
El Centro para el Control y Prevención de Enfermedades ha otorgado a BIENESTAR $2,250,000 en fondos para programas de prevención del VIH/SIDA . Los fondos serán utilizados durante un periodo de cinco años en apoyo a Latinos gay y bisexuales entre los 14 y 24 años de edad. Gracias a los fondos BIENESTAR puede implementar el programa Sabores Mpowerment y ampliar la disponibilidad de servicios de VIH en el condado de Los Ángeles y San Diego. Sabores es un programa creado y diseñado por BIENESTAR y dirigido específicamente a jóvenes Latinos. El programa toma en cuenta los factores culturales y sociales que afectan el índice de VIH en esta población tales como el racismo, desventajas económicas, estatus migratorio y la homofobía |

This past summer BIENESTAR clients, community members and supporters celebrated the grand opening of the agency’s 10th
center. In attendance at the ribbon-cutting ceremony were representatives
from the offices of various congressional, legislative and county public
officials. Long Beach Councilmember Laura Richardson pledged to assist
BIENESTAR in enhancing HIV/AIDS services in the Long Beach area. |
En Junio 2006 , BIENESTAR celebro la gran apertura de su décimo centro localizado en Long Beach. Miembros, líderes y colaboradores de la comunidad se reunieron para la gran apertura. A Tu Alcance is a capacity-building program offered to community-based organizations in Southern California. This program provides training and one-on-one assistance in developing HIV/AIDS programmatic and administrative services geared specifically towards the Latina/o community.
The workshops are based on culturally-specific models developed by BIENESTAR. By offering this type of organizational development and implementation assistance, A Tu Alcance aims to improve the efficacy of HIV services and prevention programs that serve the Latina/o community.
These services are offered to small Latino-based organizations, as well as mainstream HIV/AIDS providers with an interest in implementing and maintaining services within the Latino population. These workshops and trainings are geared toward program administrators, coordinators, health educators, outreach workers, promoters and anyone working in the HIV/AIDS prevention field.

A Tu Alcance es un programa de servicios de capacitación que ofrece entrenamiento y apoyo individual a agencias comunitarias que desean ó estén en vía de desarrollar programas de prevención y educación del VIH/SIDA en la comunidad Latina. Este programa esta a disposición de agencias comunitarias en el sur de California.
Los talleres de A tu Alcance están basados en los módulos de prevención y cuidado que BIENESTAR ha desarrollado específicamente para la comunidad Latina. Su enfoque es en mejorar la eficacia de los servicios de VIH y fortalecer los servicios de prevención y cuidado que han sido específicamente diseñados para los Latinos.
Estos servicios están dirigidos a organizaciones cuyo interés es implementar o conservar servicios de apoyo dentro de la población Latina. Los talleres y cursos de capacitación están dirigidos a administradores de programas, coordinadores de programas, educadores y promotores de salud y a cualquier persona que trabaje en el campo de la prevención de VIH/SIDA.
